Hypno-WHAT? What is that?

No, we don’t hypnotize babies.

It is important to remember that hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we are all already in many times a day, so it’s a very natural thing in our lives and is not an “altered state”. Hypnobabies teaches self-hypnosis and you are always in full-control. Nobody does it “to you.” Hypnosis provides more control and you are always fully aware of suggestions. Any unwanted suggestions are simply and easily ignored because hypnosis is a way to highly concentrate during relaxation on things or subjects of your choice. During Hypnobabies you are suggested to relax and concentrate on having an easier and more comfortable childbirth. What we focus on is what usually becomes reality.

Hypnosis is not:

1. Being controlled by someone else

2. A loss of self-control

3. A state of unconsciousness

4. A state of sleep

Examples of everyday hypnotic states which you have already experienced naturally:

1. Driving the car (when you drive in auto-pilot mode, yet you adhere to all traffic laws)

2. Riding the elevator (daydreaming or dozing-off into space)

3. Watching TV, movies, computer screens or video (When you really “get into” that movie or show)

4. Being bored by another person (When you think about everything else other than what they are saying)

5. Waking up and going to sleep (The moment right before you fall asleep where you are fully relaxed, or right before you wake up when you are trying to remember the dreams you had)

6. Reading a book (When your mind wonders about other things and you must go back to re-read a paragraph… or two)

Hypnosis begins with a deep state of relaxation and it is best described as a focused state of awareness, concentration and perception. While in a state of hypnosis, the conscious mind relaxes and the attention of the subconscious mind is stimulated, which allows access to more of our brain’s potential.

THAT SOUNDS GREAT! What’s the catch?

It takes practice! Simple daily practice from the first day of class to the day of your birth. Some of the daily practice will be while you sleep. Moms even choose to use these new techniques for things like menstrual cramps, breastfeeding and even if they have trouble sleeping once baby is home.

I am a Christian, will this conflict with my beliefs?

Hypnobabies is designed for women of every faith and belief system to use, it contains no “new-age” or other content that would offend anyone. Though if you choose to, it is easy to modify it and incorporate your beliefs in the hypnosis scripts during practice and incorporate prayer and scripture during YOUR birthing.

Comments from some of the Christian Hypno-Moms about their experiences with Hypnobabies:

Sarah C.:

As a Christian, I believe that Christ suffered in Gethsemane so we wouldn’t have to feel pain unnecessarily. He gives us a way out. To me, Hypnobabies was the method that felt inspired. It embraces the power of our God-given bodies and helps eliminate fear (the opposite of faith/hope) through natural means. Charity is proclaimed as the greatest quality which is love in its strongest, purest form. There is so much focus on love for your mind, your body, and your baby that it felt like what Christ would want for mothers.

Crystal I.:

As a Christian, using Hypnobabies was the most natural thing in the world for me. The slowing of brain waves that occurs with deep relaxation and hypnosis is the same state that occurs when we pray. That to me says that there is no conflict between hypnosis and Christianity because God would not leave me vulnerable when praying, when praying is something I do so often! Since you are always aware while in hypnosis, only thoughts that you desire will be accepted, you are always in complete control of your mind, just as you are when praying. While some segments of Christianity feel that pain is still a necessary part of childbirth, others feel that since Christ died for our sins, we are no longer required to experience pain during birth. Since the vast majority of women choose some form of anesthesia, and most churches support them in this, hypnotic anesthesia is no more in conflict with our theology than an epidural. In short, I can find no theological reason not to use Hypnobabies.

Liz S:

I’m a Christian and used hypnobabies for the birth of my daughter. My degree is in theology and Biblical studies, there is nothing in the Bible that conflicts with the hypnobabies program. Self-hypnosis isn’t what you see on stage with hypnosis shows. I felt like hypnobabies was more deep relaxation and controlling my mind. No one can tell you what to do or make you do anything. I studied it a lot before I made my decision because I had the same concern.

Jessica L:

I am a Christian and had my first two children all natural with hypnobabies. I incorporated bible verses into my script and that my husband read to me. I felt it was exactly how God created our baby’s to come into this world. I did not see any conflict.

Will I do something against my will?

When you are hypnotized, you are aware of all suggestions given to you and you will not do anything against your moral or ethical principles. Suggestions are simply ignored just as you do while you are not in hypnosis.
For example, *YOU MAY RAISE YOU ARM NOW*…did you raise your arm after reading that? No? Good, you simply ignored the suggestion and that is how in-control you are during hypnosis. Yes? Well, it is ok, that just means you trust us already. Hypnosis isn’t too complicated. (Despite what you may have seen in stage hypnosis shows.)

Could I get stuck in hypnosis?

There is no danger of a person failing to come out of the hypnotic state. In fact, it would be impossible to remain hypnotized. Some people choose to stay in a relaxed state longer (especially tired moms/dads) a little longer because it feels so good and it’s the most relaxed they’ve been in their lives!

Does it work for everyone? I don’t think I can be hypnotized!

Essentially, everyone is able to go into hypnosis. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, technically no one can hypnotize you. Hypnotherapists and your Hypnobabies instructor will only guide you and help you stay focused on relaxation and to help you go deep into hypnosis. There is no such thing as a “good” student or a “bad” student, only those who choose to listen, relax and stay focused on the scripts.
